Kir-Yianni 'Akakies' Sparkling Rosé of Xinomavro, Amyndeon, Greece 2024
$24
Kir-Yianni is one of the most respected wineries in Greece. They're known for making high-quality, expressive red Xinomavro from mainland Greece. This is a sparkling of that same grape, harvested earlier and made in the Charmat method of sparkling. Notes of ripe strawberry, underripe cherry, and savory red tomato. Just a touch of residual sugar brings out the fruit flavors. This is best for pre-dinner aperitif, but could also pair with dessert.
Ciro Picariello, Fiano di Avellino, Campania, Italy 2024
$31
Ciro Picariello is celebrating his 20th vintage of Fiano with this wine. In those two decades he has quickly gained cult status as one of the best producers of the grape. With zero oak in the winery, this 100% stainless Fiano retains the vibrant acidity and layered minerality of the wild Campanian terroir. Notes of apple, white nectarine, hazelnut and a touch of salt, this wine is perfect for the warm-up course. Be it a cheese board or potato chips, a glass of this will be an ideal companion. If white wine is your thing, it'll also go splendidly with the Turkey dinner.
Division, 'Nouveau Nouveau' Gamay, Columbia Valley, Washington 2025
$18
Following the French tradition of Beaujolais Nouveau being released the "Third Thursday in November after the Harvest", Portland's own Division makes this incredible Gamay for near-immediate consumption each year. Youthful, fresh fruit flavors and balanced texture give the wine a serious easy-drinking quality. We'd say this is one of those drink anytime wines - no need to save it for the main event. It can be the warm up while cooking, or the one you reach for when you probably shouldn't have another glass (but will anyways).
Landmass, Gamay, Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley, OR 2024
$35
Due to the aforementioned tradition of Nouveau in November, the Gamay grape has become a logical and fitting choice for Thanksgiving pairings. The ladies of Landmass, by now a household name in NE Portland, have evolved from their white & sparkling-centric roots to now *also* make compelling and delicious red wines. This Gamay from Jubilee Vineyard leans towards the more muscular and sturdy side, with notes of white pepper, red fruit, and plum spices. This is one of the three reds that you should set aside for the main event.
Twill Cellars, Pinot Noir, Vojtilla Vineyard, Chehalem Mountains, Oregon 2023
$57
Twill is a humble yet intensely dedicated winery we are excited to finally get to know. They craft Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah from only organic vineyards in the Willamette Valley. The wines are made without intervention and old-world methods. This vineyard is on an east-facing slope in the Chehalem Mountains, showcasing the cooler, savory, and slightly rustic side of this grape. It opens with dark red fruit that gives way to damp earth, muddled raspberries, and a little rose. A perfect wine for the main spread. Open and, if possible, decant about an hour before dinner.
La Antigua, Clásico Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2015
$33
We are huge fans of Rioja for Thanksgiving (and holiday in general) drinking. An added bonus is that well-aged wines from this region can still be purchased at great prices. This 2015 Reserva from Alberto Orte showcases the brighter side of Rioja. 60% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano grapes are harvested from the high-elevation vineyards of the Sierra de la Demanda mountains. The wine is aged six years in barrels (mostly French, some American) before bottling and resting longer in bottle before release.
The result is a beautiful, well-integrated wine that is surprising youthful and fresh given its age. Juicy raspberry and cherry are complimented by the oak spice. Acidity is fresh and lively. It won't overpower white meat and will go great with Turkey. If you do an alt-Thanksgiving, this will stand up to anything heavier too. Open when the bird goes in the oven and, if possible, decant. (If you only have one decanter, save it for this bottle)
