The Maillart Family has been farming grapes in the village of Montagne de Reims since at least 1753, though there is evidence that they may have been associated with these vineyards 200 years prior. Nicolas (9th generation) has been in charge since 2003. His wines showcase both the traditional styles of the house, while standing on new foundations of sustainable farming and low-intervention winemaking.

Technical

55% Pinot, 45% Chardonnay from Bouzy (Grand Cru) and Ecueil (1er Cru). 30+ year od vines from clay and limestone soils. Harvested late September / early October and blended with roughly 40% reserve wines. The wine sees a mixture of fermentation vessels - about 2/3 new French oak and 1/3 stainless steel. It only sees 4 g/l dosage.

Tasting

Coming from the spectacular 2012 vintage, this wine is a wonderful showing by Nicolas Maillart. It has a richness of yeast and brioche not typical of his style, but is framed by taut acidity and a mineral backbone. Lush fruit and roundness give this more of a 'Grand Marques' style than a typical Grower style. It is a rich and lush Champagne perfect for special occasions.
