Summer is here! Backyard barbecues, trips to the river, campfires, park hangs. It's one of the best times of the year to sip on value whites, savory rosé's and chilled reds. Here's 6 wines to make your Summer even better.
Bellenos, 'Cuvée Blanc' Coteaux Bourguignons, Burgundy, France 2018
100% Chardonnay from Beaujolais, in Southern Burgundy. Practicing organic. Fermented and aged entirely in Stainless Steel.
A juicy, expressive Chardonnay from a warmer climate but made with a lighter touch. Notes of golden apple, lemon meringue, and starfruit. Medium bodied, dry, and NOT buttery - this is classic, straightforward French Chardonnay.
Wittman, 'Estate' Riesling Trocken, Rheinhessen, Germany 2020
Dry Riesling from this 360 year old, Biodynamic Estate in the Rheinhessen. Wittman has long been a leader in the area and today is helping shepard a push towards biodynamics and lower intervention winemaking.
The Riesling is gently pressed and fermented in large neutral casks. It sees 10 months on the lees to add richness and texture. Notes of peach, melon, and white flowers. Mouthfeel is dry, with racy acidity and a pleasant, chalky minerality. Lovely spicy food wine (Looking at you, Eem), but also perfect for drinking by itself on a warm day.
Stamnaki, 'Moschofilero' Peloponnese, Greece 2022
100% Moschofilero grown at 2600ft elevation in Southwest Greece. Organically grown with minimal intervention in the cellar.
Notes of Citrus, Melon, and Pineapple with a touch of white flowers on the finish. Medium bodied, juicy, and a great companion to seafood, lemon/garlic vegetables or white meats.
Funaro, Rosato of Nero d'Avola, Sicily, Italy 2022
Rosé of Nero d'Avola from a small family winery in Western Sicily. Certified Organic, and 100% estate grown, with mindfulness towards sustainability with every part of the production process.
Elegant and aromatic with notes of grapefruit, white strawberry, and wild Mediterranean scrub. Juicy, light to medium weight palate with driving acidity. A great summer sipper that is incredibly versatile.
Queen of the Sierras, Chillable Red-ish, Sierra Foothills, California 2021
Blend of Zinfandel, Grenache, and Tempranillo from about 2000' of elevation in Calaveras County. Estate grown, certified Organic. They call it a Rosé but we call it a chilled Red-ish.
A bit funky with watermelon rhind, ripe strawberry, cran-apple notes. Light bodied (as a red), with medium to high acidity and salty, savory undertones. It's a great chillable 'red' to fill the void when white & rosé season seems to be never ending.
Division, Béton, Red Blend, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2021
A Loire-esque blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Côt, Gamay, and Pinot. 100% concrete fermented and aged (Béton is concrete in French).
Notes of red fruit and blackberries with soft, herbal undertones and a warm, baking-spice laden finish. Medium bodied, with a juicy acidity and pleasant finish, this is a versatile red that can be chilled or not, and doesn't need food but can definitely add to a meal.
